When you travel with us, you can bring:
- one personal item, 25 lbs. (12 kg) and 14 x 11 x 7 inches.
- two carry-on items, 50 lbs. (23 kg) and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each (Pacific Surfliner: up to 28 x 22 x 11 inches each)
- two additional bags for $20 each.
How strict are trains with luggage?
Passengers must be able to safely lift carry-on items over their heads onto the luggage shelf. Please note that bags must fit in the sizer at the station. If they do not fit, speak with an agent or visit Amtrak.com to determine if your train offers checked baggage service.
Do you check bags on a train?
Checked baggage service is available at a number of our stations and on many trains and Thruway Services. Not all trains or locations are equipped to handle checked baggage. Before you travel, make sure to check and see if your train and origin and destination stations accept checked baggage.
Can you bring your own snacks on a train?

Pro Tip: The best part about traveling by train? No liquids restrictions! Make sure you don't leave home without bringing the necessities! Each traveler may bring 2 personal and 2 carry-on items plus check up to 4 bags (2 free and 2 at $20 per bag).

Handbags and small shopping bags are suitable to store under a seat. Rucksacks and hand luggage can find adequate space in the overhead racks. Larger suitcases and large rucksacks can be stored in the carriage luggage area. Our Voyager trains have a dedicated luggage area in Coach D for easy storage of larger bags.
How do you protect yourself on a train?
Sit in the “Conductor car” usually in the middle of the train during off-peak hours. You are less likely to get harassed or be victimized in this car. Avoid end cars when possible especially during late night hours. Cover jewelry and turn gem stone rings inward towards the palm side of your hand.

Luggage should be stored in overhead luggage racks, under the seats or in one of the luggage compartments located near the doors or in the middle of the carriage. You may also take prams/ pushchairs and sports equipment (e.g. skis and surfboards) on board.
