Stopping. Trains can't stop quickly. A freight train can take up to a mile to come to a complete stop. A locomotive engineer who suddenly sees someone on the tracks is not be able to stop in time.
Why do trains stay running?
The locomotive must run to keep the air pressure brakes on a train applied (the equivalent of keeping a car in park). In temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the engine has to be kept warm for engine fluids to work properly, as antifreeze cannot be used in locomotive engines.

Trains can't stop quickly or swerve. The average freight train is about 1 to 1¼ miles in length (90 to 120 rail cars). When it's moving at 55 miles an hour, it can take a mile or more to stop after the locomotive engineer fully applies the emergency brake.
Do train engines never stop?
Yes, diesel engines are always running in case you didn't know! We don't see any other type of train doing this, but only diesel locomotives leave their engine running always. In case you haven't noticed, diesel trains are never turned off. They are always left running.
