January is the chilliest month in the Algarve, but comparatively, to everywhere else, it's balmy – it's even warmer than Lisbon at this time of year. The Atlantic Ocean isn't ideal for swimming for any length of time (although those accustomed to cold water swimming might be able to take a quick dip!)
