There are no fees to open or to maintain a FasTrak account, regardless of the type of toll tag you use. Think of your FasTrak account as a little bank account for tolls. Your account must always have a balance, and tolls will be automatically deducted from your balance each time a toll is collected.

What happens if you don’t pay tolls in California?
The registered owner will receive a violation notice in the mail (usually within two weeks). Each violation transaction is assessed a $57.50 penalty in addition to the toll amount due. If the registered owner has no previous violations, the penalties will be waived. This is a courtesy for first time violators only.
How do you know if your transponder is bad?
Locking problems – if you use your transponder key to lock your vehicle remotely, but it doesn't lock consistently, then something is wrong. The same rule applies for when you use the transponder to open a lock while inside the vehicle, but it won't.
Do fastrak transponders have batteries?

A The battery may fade after five years or so, in which case you call customer service and exchange the tag for a new one. However, when a FasTrak account has not been used for 12 consecutive months or longer, you will be notified and can either close the account or keep it open.
