The road from the Visitor Information Station to the summit can be dangerous. It is an unpaved cinder road with steep inclines and extreme switchbacks. Travel time: 30 minutes, weather conditions permitting.

The drive to the summit of Mauna Kea is very dangerous and must only be undertaken by experienced drivers. Four-wheel drive vehicles are required above the Visitor Information Station located at the 9,000 ft. level. Individuals with certain health conditions should not travel to high altitude.

Can I see lava at Kilauea?
The Kilauea is a dynamic volcano, and lava viewing conditions change daily. Even if a viewing area is organized by the National Park, this does not guarantee close access of the lava. Often a 1+ hour hike over hazardous terrain is necessary to reach the flow front of the lava.
Can you drive to Mauna Loa volcano?
Both are accessible by one-lane paved roads. Neither has public telephones or public transportation. It takes about an hour to drive from the Kilauea Visitor Center via Mauna Loa Road to the trailhead, and two hours to drive to the Observatory trailhead via Saddle Road.
Can you drive to Big Island volcano?
You can drive as far as the old Jagger Museum and get out to look over the crater to but there is so much more to the Kilauea Volcano. Expect to spend at least most of the day exploring the area and driving the Chain of Craters Road.

The two main roads visitors will travel are Crater Rim Drive and Chain of Craters Road. All roads in the park are two-wheel drive roadways and do not require four-wheel drive vehicles. Start your visit at the Kīlauea Visitor Center located just beyond the park's entrance station on the right.
