Is it safe to swim in Crater Lake?

But- can you swim in Crater Lake? The short answer is – yes, yes you can! Despite its chilly temperatures year-round, many adventurous souls flock to the lake's shores each summer to take a dip and experience the unique beauty of this national treasure.

What is special about Crater Lake?

Has anyone ever swam in Crater Lake?

In 1929, Lee Fourrier became the first person to swim across Crater Lake, but her swim was only one way. More recently, serious swimmers ride out to Wizard Island on one of the tour boats and swim to the dock, as the boat dock is the only legal access to the water from the rim.

Why does Crater Lake not freeze?

Although skim ice occasionally forms on Crater Lake during the winter, its resistance to surface freezing is due to the underlying heat reservoir remaining from summer heating. The sun warms the lake during the summer to a depth of 300 feet, often raising the surface temperatures into the high 50's and low 60's.
