All walkers must carry a day sack containing waterproofs, a hat, gloves, spare clothing, whistle, food and drink, the relevant map and a compass. On some walks you will also find a torch useful, as some of the levada walks pass through tunnels. You may also need to carry sun cream.
What do I need to pack for Madeira?
In short, Madeira's mild climate means you don't need to worry about a complicated packing list. Primarily, your case should be filled with comfortable clothing that can be layered for cooler days. And always pack that raincoat! Even in paradise, you can get caught in the rain.
Do I need hiking shoes for Madeira?
We strongly recommend you take waterproof shoes on your hiking trip to Madeira. The PR 9 – Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail is the hike on which we got very wet inside of our shoes because of the waterfalls coming down on the trail. Keep in mind, that it doesn't have to rain to get your feet wet.
