Interlaken is a perfect base for the BO or Berner Oberland area…as are Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald… whether you want to be in the mountains or down in the flats between two lakes. Personally i prefer Interlaken and have stayed there dozens of times – i like the city atmosphere.
