The public outcry about the impact on the penguins that followed led to Environment Minister Reece Whitby scuttling the plan in 2022, the same summer half the penguin chicks on the island died from extreme heat without human intervention to save them.

We do not recommend walking or wading across the sandbar to Penguin Island. Strong rips and currents can occur, and the water depth and conditions change rapidly. The best way to get to Penguin Island is to board the ferry across, which departs hourly from 9am to 3pm.
Is Penguin Island open?
Penguin Island closes from early June to mid September each year for the little penguin nesting season. Perth Wild Encounters operates an hourly ferry service to Penguin Island from 15 September to early June (costs apply).
